This work provided new evidence supporting a centrally-mediated oxygen delivery limitation to oxygen uptake dynamics during high intensity exercise. Simultaneous measurement of pulmonary gas exchange with heart rate variability and impedance cardiography (as surrogates of cardiac vagal control and stroke volume) provided novelty. A protocol of multiple repeat transitions to moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise and a large sample group were key methodological features. These results indicate the substantive role of cardiac stroke volume and heart rate variability in physiological models of aerobic function and their importance for interpreting training effects on oxygen uptake dynamics.
