Invited paper following a presentation at the 19th UK Association for Computational Mechanics in Engineering Conference (ACME-UK) which was awarded the Best Postgraduate prize. The work formed part of the PhD thesis that won the ACME-UK Best UK PhD thesis prize in 2013. This thesis later competed for the best European PhD award from ECCOMAS (European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Science). The research was funded by the EU FP7 ITN project ATCOME and has led to a semi-plenary lecture invitation in the World Congress of Computational Mechanics, Barcelona 2014, with an expected number of participants above 2000.
