Item Description: Impact Factor: 4.2. This study was part of a larger research programme “Effective Structural Unit Size in Polycrystals: Formation, Quantification and Micromechanical Behaviour” and funded by EPSRC, Timet (Paul.Garratt@Timet.com) and Rolls-Royce. The other academic collaborators included: Swansea, Birmingham, Imperial College London, Manchester and Oxford universities. The detailed analysis into the variant selection mechanism was carried out to investigate the effect of beta grain growth and to study its practical impact on texture formation, which is critical for titanium industries. This was a fundamental study to understand formation of marcozone that can cause catastrophic failure in aerospace structures. Further, 2 postdoctoral positions were created following the results obtained in this study.
