Item Description: This research, partly funded by The Leverhulme Prize awarded to the second author for his contributions as young investigator in Computational Mechanics in November 2011, was developed in collaboration with the Chair of Computational Mechanics at Siegen University and the Institute of Mechanics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The paper introduces key enhancements into an existing computational immersed methodology with the purpose of improving its accuracy and robustness when modeling heart valve related problems. This research, partly developed under EPSRC funding (EP/F03010X/1), led to a keynote lecture in the V International Conference on Coupled Problems 2013.
