This paper, prepared as a special issue’s invited contribution, was awarded the Best Postgraduate research paper of the 19th UK Association of Computational Mechanics in Engineering (ACME). The paper borrows state-of-the-art techniques from Computational Fluid Dynamics in order to develop the next generation of Computational Solid Mechanics software. It is expected that the software currently under development will lead in the medium term to a step-change in industry standards. This research was carried out under the European Union FP7 ITN project “Advanced Techniques in COmputational MEchanics (ATCOME)”, of which I am co-investigator at Swansea University.
