Item Description: This research was pursued in collaboration with FLS-PERI, USA under contract to a number of multi-national mining organisations to provide a rationale basis for the optimal design operation of their very large industrial heaps at major mine sites, typically in the USA, Peru, Chile, etc. The computational model involves flow through variably saturated porous media with a complex suite of gas-solid-liquid chemical reactions, and is validated against detailed small and large scale laboratory experiments over an extended period. The model has been exploited by our collaborators Freeport-McMoran in developing their engineered heap technology which yielded significant increases in copper recovery.
