Item Description: In this paper the concept of a hybrid optical parametric amplifier (OPA)is introduced, which consists of a low-gain fiber OPA, followed by a non-OPA amplifier. This is introduced to reduce the nonlinear signal-signal crosstalk which is generated in fiber OPAs, and is known to be a severe limitation for amplification of broadband signals. Eliminating this crosstalk is crucial to allow OPAs to compete with, and outperform, other types of amplifiers. The paper shows that if the OPA gain is moderate, its main advantages can be preserved, while the noise figure of the hybrid is still quite acceptable. Hence this paper provides a much-needed direction for the development of OPAs for future high-capacity communication networks, essential for the continued growth of Internet.
