Item Description: The controversy over fracking in the UK has been centered on the drilling and injection; however, so-called produced water that accompanies gas or oil is highly contaminated and cannot be easily reused. Membrane separations of hydrocarbons from water fail due to fouling. This paper reports that using functionalized nanoparticles substrates can be coated to exhibit very low water contact angle to create a super hydrophilic surfaces, which allows for efficient oil/water separation. This offers the potential that water from oil and gas production can be reused rather than disposed of.
