This paper presents experimental and modelling results on a particularly effective means of ensuring excellent gain fatness in a Raman amplified link. The approach which was totally novel used the natural nonlinearity in the transmission fibre to broaden the Raman pump spectrum and thus ensure uniform gain over a widening band. Excellent results were obtained with less than 1dB variation over a c band with just 2 pump lasers. The experiments were conducted by the student Ellingham and the project was supervised by Prof Doran. |
