Abstract: This 'Big Ideas' shows how Aneurin Bevan, politician, tactician and orator was instrumental in setting up the first National Health Service in the world. It tracks his life and work and identifies how his ideal of a free health service funded out of general taxation was achieved. It contrasts social medicine with medicine for profit and current challenges facing the NHS.
