The title indicates that literature and psychoanalysis should not be seen in a relationship of mastery and subordination - rather, literature is ‘in’ psychoanalysis in a double sense: ‘in’ psychoanalysis as a patient is in analysis, and ‘in’ analysis by inhabiting and illuminating the procedures of psychoanalytic discourse itself. This sense of mutual involvement between the two forms of writing informs the book throughout: it presents psychoanalytic readings of literary texts and literary readings of psychoanalytic texts, and demonstrates in a series of practical case studies the mutually instructive and mutually challenging relationship between the two discourses. As a casebook of psychoanalytic readings of literary texts and literary readings of psychoanalytic texts, the volume works as an effective teaching tool for introducing students to the complexities of psychoanalytic theory in practice. The texts selected are commonly set on courses, and map the development of the field from Freud up to the most contemporary work. |
