Item Description: The paper presents, for the first time, a unified framework for the a-posteriori error analysis of nonconforming finite elements. These non standard finite elements are well suited to handle 'pathologies' of conforming FE solutions, such as locking. A preliminary version of the paper was presented by Cartensen in a plenary lecture at the 2nd International Conference on Scientific Computing and Partial Differential Equations, Hong Kong 2005.
