Abstract: This research utilises a bibliometrics approach to analysing the development and evolution of the concept of New Public Management (NPM) over 25 years. The article uses the ideas of conceptual breadth and depth to examine how academics engage with the subject, with breadth looking at how articles on NPM have spread into new academic journals or disciplines over time and depth looking at the research that these articles cite. The findings demonstrate that while the NPM literature has broadened over time, there has not been a concurrent deepening of the literature. The bibliometrics approach allows for a systematic review of the entire body of literature and provides a quantitative approach to identifying potential avenues for future research on the topic.
