Abstract: |
Britton's new version of Three Sisters was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in March 2016, and then on BBC i-Player http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0739rh4. It is a complete reworking of the play, taking it back to Chekhov’s original intent, giving equal attention to all three of the Prozorov sisters (rather than concentrating on the Masha/Vershinin love story, which has been the recent Western theatre tendency). In particular Britton raises the profile of the eldest sister Olga (who, after all has the first and last major speeches of the play), and reveals the comedy which seeks out the gaps in the sadness of their existence. |
