Abstract: This chapter examines the extent to which two forms of institutionally produced hostility - against migrants and that which is targeted against welfare claimants - have become closely interlinked in the context of 'austerity politics'. It examines the ways that a set of political ideas sustain a climate of violence. It explores the way individual violence, in this context, mirrors institutional violence.
