The report offers a comprehensive review of the benefits that digital media has brought to sensory impaired users in Wales and some of the barriers that affect people who have sensory loss. Reported data shows that although only used by half of the sight-impaired community, digital media is crucial to the wellbeing of the sight-impaired users. However, blind and partially sighted people who responded to the questionnaire demonstrate a disadvantaged level of digital media engagement. This report has identified a number of barriers facing people who are sensory impaired in Wales in accessing information, education and services. Barriers were identified mainly in the areas of financial restraints, access to training opportunities, and web accessibility. In addition to emphasise the importance of financial support, digital skills training and web accessibility, the report also recommend a new technology design agenda to the industry in both public and private sectors. Authors endorse what Graham Pullin (2009) suggests the &#x2018;resonant design&#x2019; approach, which incorporates disabled and non-disabled users based on coincident needs. Design should emphasize on users and tailor the technology capacity around the need of the user, even such design might look like low-tech and long-lasting.
<type>ResearchReportExternalBody</type><journal/><publisher>Swansea University and RNIB Cymru</publisher><keywords>Digital media, sight impaired users, Wales, financial restraints, training, web accessibility, design</keywords><publishedDay>11</publishedDay><publishedMonth>10</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2018</publishedYear><publishedDate>2018-10-11</publishedDate><doi/><url>https://www.swansea.ac.uk/media/Digital%20Media%20Usage%20of%20Sensory%20Impaired%20Users%20in%20Wales.pdf</url><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Media</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>AMED</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><degreesponsorsfunders>Institution</degreesponsorsfunders><apcterm/><lastEdited>2020-10-01T13:18:34.4205257</lastEdited><Created>2018-11-15T22:14:59.8650186</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Culture and Communication - Media, Communications, Journalism and PR</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Yan</firstname><surname>Wu</surname><orcid>0000-0002-5741-6862</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Stephen</firstname><surname>Lindsay</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Jonathan</firstname><surname>Cable</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Rhys</firstname><surname>Jones</surname><order>4</order></author><author><firstname>Leighton</firstname><surname>Evans</surname><order>5</order></author><author><firstname>Xianghua</firstname><surname>Xie</surname><order>6</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>45949__18293__f24b68ab1b97466d909ae75c4eaff277.pdf</filename><originalFilename>Digital-Media-Usage-of-Sensory-Impaired-Users-in-Wales.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2020-10-01T13:08:01.7959187</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>255604</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Version of Record</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
