It examines debates surrounding the desirability of gender incongruence between researchers and their informants. By acknowledging the complex interplay of gender and relations in the field, experiences of power are presented as variable and dynamic rather than fixed. Honest and detailed accounts of interactions with sex workers are used to show the complexities of embodying masculinity in clandestine and feminized spaces. The need to consciously manage and comprehensively reflect upon the impact of gender, and the complex array of power dynamics in the field is discussed.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Sexualities</journal><volume>23</volume><journalNumber>5-6</journalNumber><paginationStart>757</paginationStart><paginationEnd>774</paginationEnd><publisher>SAGE Publications</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>1363-4607</issnPrint><issnElectronic>1461-7382</issnElectronic><keywords>Gender, masculinity, massage parlours, ethics, sex work</keywords><publishedDay>1</publishedDay><publishedMonth>9</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2020</publishedYear><publishedDate>2020-09-01</publishedDate><doi>10.1177/1363460719847096</doi><url>http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/1363460719847096</url><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Criminology</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>CRIM</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><lastEdited>2021-01-12T15:42:56.7833837</lastEdited><Created>2019-01-04T10:47:10.8280946</Created><path><level id="1"/><level id="2"/></path><authors><author><firstname>Samuel John</firstname><surname>Hanks</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Sam</firstname><surname>Hanks</surname><orcid>0000-0001-9240-2952</orcid><order>2</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>0048030-11012019095534.pdf</filename><originalFilename>48030..pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2019-01-11T09:55:34.5570000</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>171236</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Accepted Manuscript</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><action/><embargoDate>2019-05-15T00:00:00.0000000</embargoDate><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
