In medieval Europe women saw their role in the Christian Church and society progressively confined to conflicting models of femininity epitomised by the dichotomy of Eve/Mary. Classical views of gender, predicated on misogynistic dichotomies which confined women to matter and the corruption of the flesh, were consolidated in powerful male-dominated clerical institutions and widely disseminated. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, however, women’s corporeality and somatic spirituality contributed to and influenced burgeoning modes of piety centred around the cult of the Virgin Mary and the veneration of the suffering body of Christ on the Cross. This shift in devotional practices afforded women as bodily beings the space for an increased level of self-expression, self-realisation, and authority. Ranging from philosophical and theological enquiry to education and art, as well as medical sciences and popular beliefs, the essays in this collection account for the complexities and richness of the conceptualisations and lived experiences of medieval Christian women. The book will be especially relevant to students and scholars of religion and history with an interest in medieval studies and gender. Whilst expounding the key strands of thinking in the field, it engages with and contributes to some of the latest scholarly research.
<type>Edited book</type><journal/><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher>Routledge</publisher><placeOfPublication>London and New York</placeOfPublication><isbnPrint>9781032080802</isbnPrint><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords>Medieval History 400-1500, Women&amp;apos;s &amp;amp; Gender History, Religion, Christianity, Religious History, History, Humanities</keywords><publishedDay>15</publishedDay><publishedMonth>11</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2024</publishedYear><publishedDate>2024-11-15</publishedDate><doi/><url>https://www.routledge.com/Women-in-Christianity-in-the-Medieval-Age-1000-1550/Kalas-Magnani/p/book/9781032080802</url><notes>In Press 2024 - title forthcoming November 2024</notes><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Culture and Communications School</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>CACS</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm>Not Required</apcterm><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2024-06-05T11:43:15.6879501</lastEdited><Created>2019-10-28T14:41:52.3416056</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Culture and Communication - English Language, Tesol, Applied Linguistics</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Roberta</firstname><surname>Magnani</surname><orcid>0000-0001-5558-8903</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Laura</firstname><surname>Kalas</surname><orcid>0000-0002-2668-3335</orcid><order>2</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
