Item Description: This paper formed part of the Marie-Curie Excellence grant on morphing aircraft (1.94M euros, 2005-2008) and was the first to consider using active winglets as control effectors. The investigation highlighted that novel aircraft configurations departed from the standard flight control approach of decoupling degrees of freedom and required a system view of such aircraft. This system level thinking was vital to the concept of the ERC Advanced Investigator grant on morphing aircraft (2.5M euros, 2010-2015).
