A rigorous longitudinal study design was essential in this clinical intervention (spanning one year with four assessments per patient), which was led by eminent surgeon Professor John Baxter. Uniquely, we found that cardiac autonomic nervous system function is improved by bariatric procedures, that favourable cardiac changes require 20% excess weight reduction, and that these benefits persist for at least one year – thus providing quantitative and clinically significant data.
