Accessibility for persons with disabilities is a neglected area of ecotourism research. What is known is derived largely from research undertaken on persons with disabilities in general tourism. It cannot safely be assumed that the lessons learned can be transferred directly to the ecotourism context. The same is true of the various sets of guidelines that have been developed to assist tourism organisations to provide accessible tourism. This is crucial in the context of ecotourism because ecotourists with disabilities are, by definition, likely to have different motivations and expectations to those who are general tourists. They are also likely to face different barriers to access, and these to different degrees, so that different intervention strategies will be appropriate. Given increasing public expectation that ecotourism providers should pay full attention to the sustainability implications of their activities, it is essential that any intervention strategies that are identified do not conflict with established sustainability principles. A better understanding of how best to address the accessibility needs of ecotourists with disabilities is therefore vitally required. Until a more complete research base is available, a precautionary approach should be adopted focusing on the attitudinal and informational barriers to ecotourism. |
