Item Description: Published in an international journal (impact factor 2.3) this paper investigates the production of self-assembled ruthenium nano-structures from ruthenium dioxide in a microwave oven focusing on their evolution and growth. Novel fractal analysis proved that the structures produced were self-similar from the smallest to largest dimensions potentially providing improved catalytic behaviour for Pt group metals. The metal extraction developed provides an improved method of extraction of Ru from its oxide and this technique is being investigated by NASA for extra terrestrial metal production.
