Item Description: Originality stems from the study being the first applied experimental intervention to explore mechanisms by which imagery helps performers manage pre-competition anxiety experiences. Novel data is provided with considerable practical application for sports performers, coaches and more widely from a clinical perspective. Significance lies in providing initial support for use of (motivational-general arousal based) imagery to change emotional experiences and explain mechanisms how sport performers successfully manage stress. For rigour the experiment was conducted in situ using a high ecological validity design over an extended period of an entire competitive season, with collection of a large data set from a number of psychological variables.
