Abstract: The article is an overview of the complex nature of thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) loading scenarios. The diverse types of TMF phasing that can exist and their prevalence within the hot sections of a gas turbine engine are discussed. The resultant damage mechanisms are investigated and attributed to the phase shift between thermal and mechanical strains within the employed cycle, unique to TMF loading.
