Item Description: In general, beamforming and channel coding are not combined as there is no gain by combining them. However, when there is no channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter, beamforming and channel coding need to be combined together to exploit the diversity gain over block-fading channels by channel coding. The proposed approach is optimal in terms of well-known diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). As shown in the paper, this approach worked well over spatially correlated channels. In the future wireless systems, antenna arrays would have high spatial correlation and CSI at the transmitter would be limited. Under this situation, the proposed approach in this work becomes very attractive and has a significant potential to be employed in the future wireless systems.
