Conceived and largely funded by the national government, its creation was a major element in a programme of political and cultural consolidation put into place after the Belgian Revolution (1830-1831) and the consequent establishment of the nation's independence. From the outset, the monument was designed to transmit ideas about history and nationhood, and functioned as a focal point in discussions of politics, language, religion and identity. This book sheds new light on a range of dynamics in nineteenth-century Belgium, using the statue as a prism; it investigates responses to it both home and abroad, and traces broader national interest in the commemoration of Godfrey, adopted as a national hero despite being born almost 800 years before the emergence of the state. Above all, it reveals that Belgian politics and culture in this period were profoundly shaped by a sustained interest in the Middle Ages, and by efforts to shape a historical narrative that traced Belgian nationhood back to that era, and beyond.
<type>Book</type><journal/><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher/><placeOfPublication>Woodbridge</placeOfPublication><isbnPrint>9781783277636</isbnPrint><isbnElectronic>9781800109469</isbnElectronic><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords/><publishedDay>14</publishedDay><publishedMonth>3</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2023</publishedYear><publishedDate>2023-03-14</publishedDate><doi/><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>History</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>AHIS</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2023-07-25T10:16:29.5952774</lastEdited><Created>2022-08-09T10:22:10.8443331</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Culture and Communication - History</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Simon</firstname><surname>John</surname><orcid>0000-0003-0728-0175</orcid><order>1</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
