Item Description: In this well cited work, engineered nanoparticle (in presence of natural organic matter) sizes were determined using several analytical techniques (transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, flow field flow fractionation). Results were compared and advantages and limitations of each technique were evaluated. This was the first study which employed a multiple-method approach for characterizing engineered nanoparticles in complex environmental media. This paper was included in a special issue of the ES&T journal to paid tribute to Jacques Buffle, the founding father of metal speciation analysis in aquatic systems.
