Item Description: This paper shows was the very first to show sucessful low amplification of >1Tb/s optical signals using a fibre optical parametric amplifier. The signals used were WDM of 26 wavelengths each at 40Gb/s and separated by 100GHz. This was a breadthrough result achived through a combination of careful amplifier design and use of advanced modulation. Hitherto all attempts at such amplfication had suffered severe cross gain modulations and the prospects for these ampilfiers had been dismissed for this reason. We showed that the short fibre length employed and phase modulation gave noise performance very close to that of conventiaonal amplification.for the first time >1Tbit/s signal amplified in a fibre OPA.
