The amplifiers are used fisrt a simple booster amplifiers and compared with equivalent Er fibre amplifier. Careful studies of the compartive noise performace is presented and significantly we show that the slightly increased noise performance gives rise to almost no impact on the subsequently transmitted signal. By careful design we were able to obtain less than 1 dB penalty for amplification of 26 dense wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) channels modulated at 43.7 Gb/s return to zero-differential phase-shift keying, with the OPA placed between transmitter and receiver. We then used the same OPA in several different roles for a long-haul transmission system. We did not insert the OPA within the loop, but investigated this role indirectly by using equivalent results for small numbers of loop recirculations. We found that standard erbium-doped fiber amplifiers currently hold an advantage over this OPA, which becomes negligible for long distances. This paper shows that at this time OPAs can handle amplification of WDM traffic in excess of 1 Tb/s with little degradation. The work showed that with further identified improvements, fibre OPAs could be a contender for wideband amplification in future optical communication networks. capacity WDM signals identifying the impact and benefit of OPAs</notes><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><lastEdited>2011-10-01T00:00:00.0000000</lastEdited><Created>2013-01-21T06:01:18.0000000</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences - Uncategorised</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Nicholas</firstname><surname>Doran</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Michel</firstname><surname>Marhic</surname><order>2</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
