Abstract: At Dawn, Two Nightingales is a comic opera in novel form, set in 18th Century Bohemia in the time of Mozart. Its title derives from a poem said to be the most dangerous verse in the world, its haunted stanzas believed to possess mysterious, supernatural powers. The impoverished Count Mitrovsky believes that within the enchanted words lies the key to his beautiful neighbour's heart, but other parties are searching for the poem too - sinister censors, dangerous criminals, bandits and brigands of all stripes. Part quest, part pantomime, and part ghost story, the novel is a comic deconstruction of the conventional historical novel and an original attempt to represent opera buffa in fictional form.
