ContextThe UK Government-funded National Health Service (NHS), much like other health systemsis experiencing significant pressures owing to the complexity of challenges to, and demandsof, healthcare provision in the developed world. This situation has driven government policylevel support for transformational change initiatives, such as Value-Based Health Care(VBHC), through closer alignment and collaboration across the healthcare system-life sciencesector nexus. Government support of such initiatives has fuelled increasing interest inadoption and implementation of VBHC as a mechanism through which to mitigate against theincreasing socio-economic burden of health care delivery in the developed world. In this reportwe consolidate the high-level findings of a research project conducted by Pfizer UK andSwansea University School of Management. The report aims to contextualise the currentperspectives on VBHC implementation from the perspectives of leaders from across the LifeSciences Sector (Sector) and the Health Care System (System).Purpose of ResearchKey to understanding the transition to VBHC and its successful implementation throughSystem-Sector collaboration was to learn from existing expertise and experience. Thisprovided a holistic and current description of the VBHC landscape in the UK, as well as theidentification of key guiding conditions, enablers and barriers to success - all of which providevaluable insights which can be utilised for closer alignment of the Life Sciences Sector andHealth Care System for the successful implementation of VBHC. In order to surface thesefindings, we deployed a multi-step approach which is outlined in the following section (seeResearch Design and Methodology).In summary the purpose of this research project was to:➢ Identify the conditions required for successful collaboration, to enable adoption andimplementation of initiatives such as VBHC➢ Capture the insight from leaders from the Health Care System and Life Science Sector(specifically Pharmaceuticals industry) as a catalyst to shaping future models ofengagement, consideration of the skills needed in the work force and new rolesrequired for enabling access and adoption of innovation in the future➢ Identify the gaps in knowledge that require further investigationThese three overarching research objectives were explored from the perspectives leadersfrom the Health Care System and the Life Science Sector. |
