Abstract: This chapter investigates linguistic integration in Wales and the potential for the Welsh language to contribute to a multilingual and inclusive approach to integration. It opens with the transformation in the twenty-first century from viewing minority languages as belonging to a particular homogenous group to perceiving them as valuable resources to speakers from multiple backgrounds. In addition, the chapter contextualises the role of language(s) in integration policies in Wales which, until recently, have been significantly influenced by the UK’s centralised immigration policy and the emphasis on the hegemony of the English language. The chapter also underscores the recent change in Wales, embodied in its Nation of Sanctuary plan, towards an alternative approach to linguistic integration which include elements of learning Welsh as well as English.
