Abstract: |
This chapter provides insight into the increasing prevalence of the ‘diseases of the West’ in Africa. It explores the reasons for this trend, including key aspects of economic growth, changes in lifestyle, and a lack of awareness and understanding of these diseases. The chapter also discusses the current trends of these diseases in Africa, the disease risk factors, and possible interventions for prevention and control. The ‘diseases of the West’, also known as the disease of affluence, is a term used to describe the negative health consequences that are associated with a high-income lifestyle. These consequences can include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer. This concept is explored in detail within the chapter and has a clear degree of overlap between other chapters of the book. |
