Recent years have seen increasing efforts to regulate online content with the view to addressing a variety of risks and harms, including terrorism. The conviction that reliance on industry efforts to self-regulate is insufficient has led to the implementation of national legislation to counter online terrorism content. This entry provides an overview of different regulatory frameworks. There lies a tension between on the one hand the protection of the fundamental principle of a free open and secure internet. And, on the other hand terrorists exploit a variety of online services which make it easier to disseminate online terrorism content globally. |
