This journal article surveys the highly polarised reception of Bernhard Schlink’s Der Vorleser / The Reader (1995) in German-language and Anglophone (British, American, and other) criticism. Beginning with a diachronic overview, the essay illuminates different waves of responses to the text over the seventeen years since its publication, before examining the dominant issues raised by critics, alongside the dialogues that have taken place between reviewers and/or academics. The essay identifies key trends, arguments and critical contributions within The Reader’s reception, examining in particular the two key ‘text crimes’ of which the novel stands accused – ethical ‘crimes against the history and memory of the Holocaust’ and ‘crimes against literature’. |
