A related polemic concerns the dating of the work. Lazaro Carreter argues for a date as early as 1604, whereas A.A. Parker contends that it was written twenty years later. My article re-examines the evidence for these opposing standpoints, and posits an alternative understanding by reading the work in the context of Quevedo's life and work.
