Item Description: This review paper was written by invitation as a result of winning the SEMNI and the ECCOMAS awards to the best PhD thesis of 2009. As a result of those prizes, an invitation to deliver a semiplenary lecture in the “4th European Conference on Computational Mechanics” was received. Also as a result of this work, two invitations to deliver a presentation in the ECCOMAS conference to be held in Vienna in 2012 and to deliver a research seminar in Cardiff University were received.
