Van Keulen conceived the project and obtained a Marie Curie IEF fellowship that funded this work. Van Keulen planned the research, generated input data, obtained unpublished data from collaborators, led data analysis and writing and was corresponding author. Paper led to an invited review in Microbiology Monographs Vol.2 (2006).
