Item Description: This paper reports the development of a layer-by-layer coating technique for quantum dots. We believe this work to be the first extensive report of layer-by-layer coating of individual quantum dots. The research is the first major result from the NSF grant studying energy transfer dynamics for encapsulated sensing systems (McShane and Meissner co-PIs). Layer-by-layer coating of the individual quantum dots enables precise distance control for energy transfer research. The work also allows size and charge control for quantum dot biocompatibility studies.
