Abstract: This 'Big Ideas' shows how Brittains experiences of working as a VAD nurse during World War One shaped her lifelong commitment to pacifism. This, together with the loss of her fiancé, brother and two close friends was to result in an unique autobiography which depicts a 'lost generation' of men from a female and non-combatants perspective. Tensions between VAD nurses and trained nurses are briefly explored and readers are encouraged to read this compelling autobiography as countries across the world commemorate the hundredth anniversary of World War One in 2014.
