Item Description: This work is important in that it overturns almost thirty years of theory to do with how small proteins diffuse on membranes that exist in association with living cells. This work is crucial for many biological applications and in vivo processes, such as when cells sense their environment due to the production of long, thin membrane tubes that connect them. Understanding this phenomenon is critical for tackling such diseases as cancer and pathologies that affect embryogenesis, for example.
