There were periodic probibitions enacted against Irish clerics holding benefices in the so-called 'four obedient shires' of the English colony in medieval Ireland, but despite this, they can be found ministering to the laity and serving in the archbishops' administrations in sizable numbers. This article profiles these Irish clerics, analysing their familial and geographic origins, the benefices they held, and the ways in which they assimilated to colonial culture, and comments on the ways in which their presence in the region influenced colonial society. |
