Abstract: |
This chapter examines the life of Christopher St Lawrence, baron of Howth, north county Dublin, in the mid to late sixteenth century. He was a member of the Old English community of Ireland, educated in England, but came into conflict with 'New English' administrators that became increasingly influential in the colony in the sixteenth century. He became an outspoken oppenent of 'cess', a tax imposed by royal prerogative, and jailed for his opposition; he was also tried for assaulting his wife and daughter. |
