Wireless device testing and development and verification of the advanced physical layer (PHY) solutions are of particular interest to cellular network operators and vendors of 4G equipment. This article portrays needs for hardware emulation of wireless systems and their deployment challenges. Furthermore, the article describes an affordable 2x2 MIMO testbed, its hardware and software components, and their connectivity. The testbed usage scenarios and experiments are illustrated through examples that are of great interest to the research community.
