Abstract: This essay draws from empirical research conducted as part of a trial for treatment of ulcerative colitis and focuses on trial participants' accounts of their illness. It offers a new conceptual thinking on chronic illness and time in health research. The paper argues for the importance of rethinking the time and temporality of illness and draws specifically on the work of Martin Heidegger to suggest the value of alternative renderings of time.
