Abstract: The paper explores the changing meanings of the Russian term “dacha” (country house), drawing on the results of fieldwork conducted in 2016 in Tver region. It challenges traditional understandings of dacha as a place dedicated to agricultural activity, and considers it in relation to the broader concepts of time, space and mobility. Building on the works Treivish (2014) and Nefedova and Savchuk (2014), it explores the ways in which physical, imagined and metaphorical mobilities produce dacha as a place for escape, belonging and even “promised land”. The paper interrogates the perceptions of dacha as a relational space that brings together attitudes, habits and practices reproducing multiple and uncertain identities of people inhabiting it (dachniki). The findings from the field data question the definitions of dacha as ”secondary” space subordinated to the city and highlights the assemblages that bring different elements of urban and rural living together in the dacha.
