Fluoride, a small and monovalent anion with high charge density, is highly mobile in certain metal fluorides and this unique property of fluoride ion makes it attractive for applications like fluoride ion–selective electrodes and batteries based on fluoride ion transport. Most of the fluoride conductivity studies were made on single crystals. Recently it was found that the ionic conductivity of nanocrystalline CaF2 increases significantly compared to single crystals. This generated fundamental interest on the ionic conductivity and ionic conduction mechanism of nanocrystalline metal fluorides. Further the use of nanocrystalline fluoride ion conductors was demonstrated in fluoride ion batteries. The following chapter is focused on the ionic conductivity of nanocrystalline metal fluorides, metal fluoride composites, and the effect of synthesis method on the ionic conductivity. |
