This chapter explores the case of Swansea University through Infrastructure and Activity initiatives, identifying learning of potential benefit to other post-industrial regions. These initiatives emphasise the diverse interactions across ecosystems, and the timescales involved in supporting knowledge-based regional economic development. Universities evolve over periods measured in decades and generations, though with increasing focus upon Research Excellence and Knowledge Exchange Frameworks providing added impetus to demonstrating societal relevance of university activity. This chapter demonstrates how, despite enormous contextual changes, a university role has remained one of enlarging the world of knowledge to the benefit of the community it serves. |
