Item Description: This is the first article describing methodology for prediction of the tensile strength of polycrystalline metals by employing multiscale finite element analysis. The paper summarises joint research with the group at Tohoku University, Japan, performed during Dr Watanabe’s one-year sabbatical stay in Swansea. The methodology described in this article has formed the basis for computational multiscale modelling of polycrystalline materials with applications to advanced manufacturing, which Dr Watanabe has continued on his return to Japan in his new position in Toyota Corporation, Nagoya, Japan (contact Ikumu Watanabe, presently at National Institute of Materials Science, Tsukuba, Japan).
