Item Description: Mathematical analysis of the performance of communications systems is often only tractable when simplified system models are used with many realistic assumptions omitted. This paper remedies this problem by introducing a novel simple-to-use method for accurately calculating the average error rates of digital modulation schemes. The proposed method generalizes the well-known Chernoff bound and the moment generating function methods. The simplicity of the proposed method facilitates new insights into the design of digital modulation schemes which are not possible when traditional methods of the performance analysis are used. The proposed methodology was successfully employed in a NERC funded project when devising strategies how to deploy wireless sensor networks in the extreme environments.IF: 1.921Cited: 7 (IEEE Xplore), 21 (Google Scholar)
